Workflow automation

Workflow automation is the practice of running a multi-step business process automatically: a trigger starts it, each step runs in order (or in parallel), and data flows from one step to the next without a person doing the busywork.

A workflow describes the steps a process takes: when an order is paid, look up the customer, update the warehouse, and email a receipt. Workflow automation runs those steps for you, reliably and repeatedly, so the work happens the same way every time.

Good workflow automation handles the parts that make real processes messy: branching on conditions, retrying when a step fails, waiting for a human approval, and connecting tools that were never designed to talk to each other.
